Meditate Day and Night

Christ for Youth International

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” [Joshua‬ ‭1:8‬ ‭NIV]

To meditate is to focus one’s mind on something for a period of time, to ponder and reflect on. It is simply to give careful thought and consideration to something repeatedly. Developing the constant habit of meditation as believers aligns us with the heart of God because God’s heart is His very word. To continually focus on something results in becoming totally saturated with that thing.

From our opening scripture, it is important to note that constant meditation on God’s word positions us to obey what it says. The more we reflect on and ponder over God’s word, the more we move in tandem with His Spirit and walk in obedience. With the roots of the word deepening in the fertile soil of a receptive heart, the more likely it is to “be careful to do everything written in it”, which comes with the experience of true and lasting prosperity.

How do we meditate on God’s word till we become saturated with it? First, learn to write down verses in a journal. As you write, it becomes easier to memorise. You may also read it in other translations and spend time pondering over it. Posting little note cards with scriptures at places you can easily visualise them (e.g., on a mirror or by your bedside) can also serve as reminders. Additionally, recite the verse continually or pray it out in your time of prayer.

Delight in God’s word. As you meditate on it day and night, your understanding of God’s word will deepen. The light of His word will illuminate every part of your life.

Dear Lord, thank You for the light of Your word given to us. I pray that You help me to form the habit of meditating on Your word. As I meditate, speak to me and teach me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
