And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. [Ephesians 6:18 NIV]
Sometimes we are unable to pray for long hours because we pray in our understanding. We do not know what we need. We always pray for what we want and not what we need. This is why the Bible keeps urging us to speak in tongues. We pray in the Spirit when we speak in tongues. It is the Spirit that leads. Look at this scenario: when people are demon-possessed, we do witness the demon manifesting and speaking, right? Then we say that the demon has taken over that person’s body. This is the same thing that happens when we speak in tongues; we do not speak of ourselves, but of the Spirit that is in us.
Speaking in tongues is connecting your spirit directly to God. It is direct communication that the devil does not understand. Why should you speak in tongues? Because the Bible says so. Does it make logical sense? Definitely not, because you do not understand what you are saying.
“And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.” [Romans 8:26–27 NLT]
There is the tendency to complain when we are weak that we are unable to pray. This is why God has given us His Spirit, who enables us to pray regardless of how we feel or what is happening to us. And that is why 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says: “Never stop praying.” It is possible to pray always, but it is only possible in the Spirit.
“A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.” [1 Corinthians 14:4 NLT]
Speaking in the Spirit strengthens you. The Spirit speaks for us when we do not have the words. You must pray over every situation and not when you feel in the “spirit.” Prayer is everything. Prayer is your key to excelling in life and building a successful relationship with God.
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us Your Spirit to speak for us. Thank You for the reminder about the strength of prayer and about the benefits of prayer. Thank You once again. In Jesus name, Amen.
